History of Carrara: “Challenge to eternity” speaks about the life of the city of marble. Many European cities have a thousand-year history. Some of them have emptied while others are blooming. Carrara is an Italian city whose ups and downs are like a mirror of all European history, from the beginning to the present day, for example from the famous sculptures made of Carrara marble to the cheap toothpaste powder. Will citizens be able to revive the city in the 21st century? History, destiny, people: who puts the pieces on the chessboard?
History of Carrara: “Challenge to eternity” – documentary dates.
Thursday 30 January, at 9.00 pm, for the absolute preview, the Garibaldi Cinema in Carrara will present the documentary film “Challenge to eternity”. Dedicated to the city of marble and its contradictions, the film is a six-handed project, written by Oxana Zhuravleva, Ekaterina Vikereva and Alexander Borisov, and directed by Oleg Kugaev.
How was the project implemented?
Immersing themselves in local life, the authors observed their movements and the changing of their rhythm from the quarries to the coast. They looked into the faces of the sincere people who live it, asked questions, collected ideas and impressions. They interviewed boys and teachers, gave voice to whom
the mountains and those who care for souls work. Furthermore, they added the contribution of two artists, a Russian sculptor and an Italian sculptor, who stopped in Carrara; theirs is an unprecedented point of view, to be listened to and treasured.
“Challenge to eternity” Carrara reads in the voice of the foreigner, the tourist, the art lover, the historian, and also the anthropologist. It is a documentary that is good for the heart for the delicacy with which it dwells on the beauty of the streets and buildings, of the Apuan Alps and of the sea, and which hurts because it inevitably leads to a reflection on the fate of those who live in this city today:
therefore, it is a subject on which, for too long, administrations and citizens themselves, that of character they have never been submissive, they seem to have closed both eyes.
In fact, the Civica Library of Carrara, Annalia Petacchi, Marco Nicoli and Marta Tongiani participated in the making of the film, which is sponsored by the Municipality of Carrara. The music is by Sergei Eksuzian with the contribution of Carlo Martinucci; the illustrations are the work of the painter Hatty Herz and the interviews were made by Diana Hasanova and
Olga Kameneva.
Finally, the project is curated by the Cultural Association MIR (World Italy Russia) which in the last 5 years has worked to encourage the development of mutual knowledge of the cultures of the two countries.
